Gold particles of different shapes and sizes can be synthesized by the simple reaction between chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) and various reducing agents (sodium borohydride, hydroquinone, hydrazine dihydrochloride) in solution. Use of triphenylphosphine as a stabilizing agent allows exercising additional control over the morphology of newly formed particles. Product of HAuCl4 reduction is powdered nano-structured gold that can be easily isolated in pure form after the reaction. Cloroauric acid is the most common source of gold in industry and in laboratory research.
